Sharm Al Shaikh: South Africa is close to brokering a deal that would ease the political conflict in Zimbabwe, a South African newspaper said on Tuesday.
Local newspaper Business Day reported a deal that would see Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai negotiate a unity government was being pushed.
"The plan involves getting Mugabe and Tsvangirai to work together to implement agreements between ZANU-PF and the Movement for Democratic Change made in January. These include a new constitution and other reforms," the paper said.
African leaders were prepared to discuss the Zimbabwe crisis at the African Union summit held in Sharm Al Shaikh, it said.
Meanwhile, Tsvangirai Tsvangirai has left refuge at the Dutch embassy in Harare and returned home, the Dutch government said on Tuesday.
Tsvangirai left the embassy on Monday but was always welcome back and the Netherlands would stay in touch with him, a foreign ministry spokesman said, adding that the Netherlands hoped he could play a role in some kind of transitional government.
