London: A Bahraini shaikh has taken pop artist Michael Jackson to court in a $7 million lawsuit for breach of contract, demanding repayment of several advances that the artist has argued were gifts.
The shaikh's lawyer, Bankim Thanki, told London's High Court on Tuesday that Bahraini Shaikh Abdulla Bin Hamad Al Khalifa was shocked when Jackson's publicist called him to say the singer wanted out of a record deal concluded in 2006.
Al Khalifa paid millions of dollars to shore up Jackson's shaky finances and subsidise his lifestyle in the Gulf state.
Thanki argued that such support was an advance on an album and an autobiography due to be produced by Jackson.
Jackson's lawyers said the money was a gift and that the record deal is invalid.
Al Khalifa watched the proceedings from a bench at the Royal Courts of Justice.
