Manila: Philippine authorities have placed the country's main airport - Ninoy Aquino International Airport - on high alert in the wake of the bloody attacks in Mumbai.

As an archipelagic country, the Philippines has major sea ports that have been targeted by terrorists in the past, mostly coming from the Jemaah Islamiya.

Alfonso Cusi, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority, said the security measures have been coordinated with the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group and other support units.

Anti-terrorist units have also placed some major seaports on high alert.

Sea marshals have also been deployed aboard passenger vessels to deter terrorist threats.
