Manila: Rescuers saved six men trapped for a week in an abandoned gold mine in the northern Philippines, officials said on Tuesday.
Eight other miners remained unaccounted for, including two whom divers are trying to reach, said Mines and Geosciences Bureau officer George Baywong.
"We don't know if they are survivors," Baywong said of the two miners. "We are hoping against hope that they are still alive."
The men entered the mine in the Itogon town during a typhoon on September 22 that rapidly flooded the tunnels, officials said. The bodies of two miners were retrieved last week.
Rescuers and relatives applauded as three survivors were brought out on stretchers on Monday and three others on Tuesday.
The survivors were week and hungry but appeared to be in good health. They have been taken to the hospital.
The men said they survived on dripping rainwater collected in plastic containers.
