Dubai: The Pakistan government is getting rid of some intelligence 'elements', who have been supportive of Taliban militants as part of its efforts to uproot terrorism from the country, said a prominent parliamentarian.
"The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) [the premier intelligence agency of Pakistan] has already lost face over Taliban issue and also it has now no role to play in influencing any decisions being taken by the elected government," Fauzia Wahab, Member of the National Assembly from the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), told reporters at a reception in Dubai on Sunday.
The reception was organised by PPP supporters in the UAE including Sardar Javed Yaqoob, Mian Muneer Hans, Qaiser Ghuman and Syed Sajjad Shah.
Wahab said that the government is gradually putting things straight and clearing the mess created by the previous government in the country's war against terrorism. She clarified that there has been no change in the government's stance to fight against terrorism.
"But we have changed strategies and adopting better approach to deal with the issue," she said.
She said that Pakistan was facing major financial crisis, but the situation would improve after establishing the Friends of Pakistan forum. "Some 12 countries are part of the forum which together will help Pakistan deal with its financial problem amongst many others," she said.
Wahab said the government needed time to perform. "We are working on plans to overcome food and electricity crisis by January next year," she said.
She said the government is now looking towards its neighbours, especially Iran which has promised Pakistan to provide electricity and oil.
The first formal meeting of Friends of Pakistan forum is expected to be held in Abu Dhabi next year.
