Dubai: Jugnu Mohsin, editor of the Friday Times, spoke about the creation of civil society in Pakistan.

"The media has seen a proliferation in General Musharraf's watch, he did grant the electronic media and television channels several licences, which led to 24/7 accountability, which then led to contradictions with the state, which then led to the suspension of some of those channels for some time.

"But these are good things that have happened in Pakistan, they've all contributed to flowering and burgeoning of civil society, a very vibrant and very critical media, electronic media supported by the print media, which has fought a very brave and long battle for rights and then the lawyer's movement, the progenitors of which are the civil society movements started by the NGOs, the women's movements and the human rights movements that were the ancestors of the lawyer's movement.

"These are very good things that have happened within the cities of Pakistan. Many good things have happened in Pakistan in the last decade, one of which is the burgeoning of civil society."
