Nairobi: Kenya’s opposition has called off mass protests planned for Thursday after President Mwai Kibaki said he would create a new Prime Minister post.
The conciliatory moves come a day after talks between the two sides were suspended by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in favour of one to one meetings with Raila Odinga and Kibaki.
Odinga said the rallies planned for Thursday were "postponed until further notice," saying in response to a request from Annan.
Negotiators for Kibaki and Odinga also said they had agreed in principal on the creation of a prime minister post for the opposition.
However they have not yet agreed on the scope or the power such a role would bring with it.
More than 1,000 people have been killed in post-election violence in Kenya.
Opposition leader Odinga has accused the president of rigging the election.
