Nairobi: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Kenya on Friday to join efforts to mediate the turmoil sparked by disputed presidential elections last month.
Ban warned on Thursday that the violence in Kenya could spiral out of control unless quick action was taken.
Speaking after a meeting with President Mwai Kibaki at an African Union summit on Thursday, he said, "These clashes are growing along ethnic lines. If political leaders fail to act responsibly, the situation could escalate beyond control."
His predecessor Kofi Annan resumed talks earlier on Friday between representatives of Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga after postponing them on Thursday after an opposition lawmaker was shot dead in the western town of Eldoret.
