Mumbai: India's top-notch artists will come together to put up their works for the cause of Sabrang, an organisation fighting communalism, and led by the human rights activist Teesta Setalvad.
Art for Sabrang - A Benefit Auction of Indian Art will be held on Thursday when the works of 60 artists will go under the hammer.
Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Kaur, Bose Krishnamachari, Gieve Patel, Jaideep Mehrotra, Jatin Das, Tyeb Mehta and S.H. Raza are just some of the leading artists who have put Indian art on the global map and, in an unusual move, they have now responded to peace initiatives of this NGO by sending their work.
Javed Akhtar, poet, lyricist and film script writer, and one of the trustees of Sabrang and its sister organisation Citizens for Justice and Peace, said on Sunday: "The funds raised at the auction will be utilised for Sabrang's various activities including the project Khoj [an educational programme] that not only focuses on the students but also the role of parents in a child's life."
Through Khoj, Setalvad and her team are trying to introduce a curriculum in Indian classrooms where children are taught to grow up to be tolerant, secular citizens.
