Mumbai: Opposition is brewing in Mahim and Dadar West to the proposed skywalks, two of the 40 that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority plans to start work within a month.

Local residents and traders in Mahim say they are not happy about the skywalk, elevated walkways for pedestrians, along the MMC Road as it would invade their privacy. Pointing out to the drawbacks, one local resident said,

"The skywalk will affect the smooth functioning of Canossa High School for Girls, which also runs a night school, as there will be neither privacy nor safety from curious onlookers."

Moreover, the construction of the skywalk will lead to the destruction of trees along the way.

At a protest meeting held last Thursday, residents questioned as to how the local representatives, member of parliament, member of legislative assembly and municipal councillor, had given the approval for the project without taking local people into confidence.

Residents and businesses in Dadar West complain that though the idea to solve the traffic woes is good, pedestrians are not always pleased at the thought of walking long distances on the skywalk.

Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad plans to discuss the problems with the local groups who are opposed to the project in their areas.
