New Delhi: Indian businessman Sanjeev Nanda was sentenced to five years in jail on Friday for running over and killing six people in 1999.
Nanda's laywers said they will appeal the verdict in New Delhi's High court.
Nanda mowed down the victims with his BMW at a police picket in South Delhi in January, 1999. Witnesses said he sped away after the incident. The victims included three police officers.
The case has been seen as a test of whether India's judicial system is willing to hold the wealthy accountable.
The court jailed three others from six months to one year in prison for destroying evidence.
