New Delhi: Former Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet's condition is serious as he remains unconscious after suffering a cardiac arrest, doctors said. The 92-year-old leader, who has been unwell for the last few months, was admitted to Metro Hospital on May 6 with fever and respiratory problem.

"We were about to discharge him on Thursday but he suffered a cardiac arrest. His heart and pulse have been revived but he is still unconscious," said a senior doctor at the hospital. "He is on ventilator and his condition is very serious. A group of doctors are observing his health," said the doctor, who cannot be identified because of hospital rules. The Communist veteran had been almost confined to his Teen Murti Lane residence in New Delhi for over a year because of ill health.
