Jiangyou: Soldiers continued efforts to drain China’s sprawling “quake lake” on Sunday, blowing up wooden houses and other debris to quicken the process.
The Tangijashan “quake lake” continued to swell even as water drained down into a diversion channel aimed to quell the threat of flooding of more than 1 million people in the disaster zone.
The draining operation continued but authorities were still on high alert, China’s official Xinhua news agency said.
Rescue workers strived to eliminate debris and boulder blocking the flow of water, Xinhua said.
The official death toll from China’s devastating quake rose on Saturday to 69,134 people, with 17,681 still missing.
Meanwhile, a cargo train derailed in northeastern Sichuan province early on Sunday after being struck by rocks falling from a mountain, Xinhua said. One railway worker was killed and another was seriously injured.
It was not known if the falling rocks were related to the May 12 quake or its aftershocks.
