TinyURL isn't the coolest new website, it doesn't have spectacular content, and it won't allow you to find old friends.

Instead the site just makes getting around on the web and passing on links to your friends incredibly easy.

TinyURL takes those long, impossible uniform resource locators, such as http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/
08/07/11/10227903.html
, and shortens them. In this case, to http://tinyurl.com/6xclbx. Try it out.

It took me longer to find a long URL than it did to convert it.

A friend from the States who sends me frequent Twitters on my mobile turned me on to this. Since Twitter only gives you 140 characters to send a message, the above URL would have taken up almost a third of the message, not to mention it would have been tedious to type out.

The site is incredibly useful when trying to send links to your friends via SMS, as the tinyURLs are simpler to remember.

Easy

Using the site is easy, too. You can copy and paste the URL you want converted directly into the webpage, or you can just click and drag a TinyURL button directly from the webpage onto your web browser. Then, whenever you have a webpage you want to share, just click on the button.

The page will then be converted to a tinyURL and copied to your clipboard, so all you have to do it paste it. The site also allows you to create custom URLs, although many simple ones such as tinyurl.com/1 have already been taken.

This site may not have much use for those of you who just use a computer, but for anyone sending links via any mobile-based application, the site is a must.
