Jeweller to the stars Neil Lane watched with interest from the sidelines as the glamour of Hollywood spilled forth onto the Oscars red carpet.
In an exclusive to tabloid! the high-end designer gave us his expert view on what was hot and what was not. To top it all, he still managed to get to Madonna and Demi Moore's after party on time!
Hilary Swank Her sleek gown was paired with jewels that were not too over the top, creating a long sinuous effect, which she personally likes. It worked very well on her.
Renée Zellweger Renée Zellweger was looking very sexy on the red carpet with her silver beaded grey gown. I think a little sparkle on her ear would have enhanced the glamour of the ensemble.
Anne Hathaway
One of the prettiest girls in Hollywood. Red is a daring colour to wear, but with her beautiful light complexion and dark hair, her pear-shape diamond earrings worked perfectly.
Miley Cyrus Miley chose a red gown and because red is such a powerful colour, it's best to go simple. The Neil Lane garnet and gold earrings worked beautifully with her look.
Jennifer Hudson I have worked for the past two weeks helping to create the jewelled Grecian Goddess look. I darkened her diamond earrings to give her a very shimmery effect against the beading of the dress.
We added 2 diamond flower pins in her hair to give her sparkle so when she turned her face there was an element of surprise. To balance out the whiteness of her dress we added one thick diamond bracelet and stacked the other wrist with diamond bangles to create an element of glittery fun. She looks absolutely beautiful.
Julie Christie I spent a number of weeks creating this special look for Julie. I crafted an iridescent, red jewelled scarab necklace set in gold, to complement her iridescent red dress.
Cate Blanchett When someone is pregnant on the red carpet they always glow in a special way, no matter what they wear.
Jennifer Garner A diamond-collar necklace could be very exciting to wear. If the necklace sits perfectly well, it could look divine. Garner pulled it off beautifully, though I would have used only one diamond bracelet.
Jessica Alba Jessica Alba paired glittery golden earrings with her purple gown for a dramatic look. I personally would have chosen white diamonds to create a softer look against the purple.

Oscar sees red
The best word to describe the red-carpet fashion at the Academy Awards: red. Katherine Heigl, Helen Mirren, Miley Cyrus, Ruby Dee, Anne Hathaway and Heidi Klum were among the stars in red gowns on Sunday night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Shades of plum were worn by Cate Blanchett and Jessica Alba.
"The actresses went regal and royal with rich reds and purples," said Oscar.com fashion analyst Tom Julian.
The other buzzword? Safe.
"I thought people looked generally really good — and really safe," Hal Rubenstein, fashion director at InStyle magazine, told The Associated Press. "I don't know if it had to do with the mood out there with the strike just over and parties cancelled, but in fashion now so much is about sheer, print and colour, but this was one solid strapless dress after another."
Rubenstein added: "There was a kind of uniform timelessness, which is very nice, but considering those who watch this show do it to get a fashion cue, I wish they were a little more timely than timeless."
He labelled French actress Marion Cotillard's ivory-and-silver gown by Jean Paul Gaultier with scalloped fabric that looked like fish scales the most distinctive of the night.
