Children enjoyed a thrilling day at the races at Modhesh Fun City

As miniature Ferraris race neck and neck, the pint-sized visitors at Modhesh Fun City (MFC) feel the adrenaline rush that full-grown racers experience on track.

Set up at the Central Hall MFC, the Toy Store Zone is available for children during the Dubai Summer Surprises 2008 where they can experience some high paced fun say organisers.

While some youngsters are enjoying the thrill of racing, others are using this opportunity to sample the drive and select which racecar they want to take home with them.

Sunil, one of the employees at the zone, said: “The children who come to us are often aware of the different kinds of products we have with us in store. The race circuit grows really busy as the day grows,” he said.

“It is not only popular among pre-teens but also with some young adults who are teaming up to organise proper races among friends.”

Often races are held with a reward for the winner determined beforehand by the racers. A common outcome is the race loser having to buy the winner his selection of cars Sunil said.

“It’s a nice way of spending time with friends and taking home a beautiful machine.”

Quick learners

Children enjoyed learning how to control the small cars with a remote. “I’ve noticed children pick up the skill faster than adults.”

A favourite among racers at the zone is the F430 challenge model — “it’s faster, bigger and much better than the other drives. Moreover, it has a battery that is stronger and lasts longer.

“So the fun does not wear out fast,” said Sunil.

Organisers say even more cars will be available at next year’s DSS.

Housed at the Airport Expo in Dubai, Modhesh Fun City is open to all from 10am to 10pm Saturday to Wednesday. On Thursdays and Fridays, the venue remains open until midnight. It opens at 3pm on Fridays. The entry fee is Dh20 per person.

Walking tall

BurJuman shopping mall and Ibn Battuta Mall hosted a unique group of musicians on stilts this week. Shoppers launched into fits of laughter after seeing the performers painted head to toe in red, green, grey and blue.

The performers also played a variety of music combining wind and percussion instruments and met with shoppers to pose for photographs.

Colour surprise

Bustan Centre hosted a colour characters walkabout as part of their DSS 2008 festivities. Models dressed in bright colours made shoppers stop and look closely at the unique walking characters.

BurJuman shopping mall will host the Colour Characters Walkabouts between today and Hamarain Centre will host the group from July 10 to July 14. Al Manal Centre have the entertainers there on July 16 and 17.
