The ice skating rink at Modhesh Fun City offers chilled out entertainment for children and adults
The Ice Rink at Modhesh Fun City (MFC) is the latest addition at the region's largest edutainment venue and has quickly become the coolest attraction during the Dubai Summer Surprises 2008.
The specially designed rink measures 22 metres by 12 metres and is located in the West Hall.
Enjoyable
"The rink is getting busier by the day. In the evenings we have many skaters on board — it is good fun to watch the boys and girls glide," said Efren Luzon who manages the desk at the ice skating zone.
Luzon said volunteers are always close by to help them get the skates on, train them and ensure an enjoyable experience. "Though we have participants from all nationalities, it's largely Arabs who are keen on the sport," he said.
The trainer and supervisor, Timothy Harrison added: "Ice skating is a sport that everyone enjoys and to hold such a treat at Modhesh Fun City is purely a learning experience.
"I can vouch that the volunteers we have with us are having as much fun if not more at the rink."
The ice rink at Modhesh Fun City is surely gaining a fan following. "It's the first time we have brought this concept to MFC and it's great to see children and adults have such a great time — speaking the language of smiles," said Harrison.
First aid
He said although the main focus was fun, skaters are given some training "and we are also prepared in case of any slip-ups. A proper first aid kit is available on site so that we can tend to any injury or fall that may occur during play".
Harrison said his team had maintained the first outdoor ice-skating rink at Safa Park last year "so maintaining a rink at these premises is relatively easy".
The rink uses an efficient cooling system and the ice is kept frozen at an average of -10 degrees celsius for optimal use and enjoyment.
Skates are available in all sizes and skaters as young as 7 can be accommodated, Harrison said.
MFC is open from 10am to 10pm Saturday to Wednesday. On Thursdays and Fridays, the venue remains open until 12.00am. It opens at 3pm on Fridays. Entry fee is Dh20 per person.
