Jubilant celebrations were held to commemorate South Africa Freedom Day in Dubai.

The family event was a hit with children, who had their faces painted and took part in activities, including a bouncy castle.

Freedom Day is officially April 27, which commemorates the first democratic post-apartheid elections held on this day in 1994.

Traditional food, such as Boerewors rolls, were popular, as was the potjiekos cooking competition. Potjiekos translates as "pot food" and is prepared in a huge three-legged cast iron pot in which lots of secret recipes are mixed to be tasted by the judges.

The event was organised by the South African Business Council in Dubai and the South Africa Mission.

The event had a host of sponsors, including South African Airways, Standard Bank and Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina.

Raffles were held for amazing prizes and a drumming session by Dubai Drums was welcomed with traditional dances.

Sajid Gani, executive committee member, South African Business Council, said: "The day was wonderful, and we had about 4,000 people in the end. The people who came absolutely reflected the South African community in Dubai and showed the all-inclusive spirit that Freedom Day symbolises."

There was also an evening of culture to celebrate South African National Day, attended by diplomats and digniteries, at the Palace Hotel, Dubai.
