Early detection is the only weapon in the fight against breast cancer, as about 70 per cent of the cases do not have any risk factors
As in many other Arab countries, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UAE.
Studies have shown that women in the region including the UAE develop breast cancer at least a decade earlier than their Western counterparts.
Awareness campaigns Over the years, people's understanding, perception and attitude towards the disease have changed, courtesy of the many awareness campaigns that run in the country.
They now know that early detection is the key in fighting the disease. We can reduce the risk factors by taking care of the body. However that doesn't prevent the disease as about 70 per cent of the breast cancer cases do not present any risk factors.
But it certainly helps to be aware of the medical background of the disease and the risk factors.
Following are a few pointers to help you in the battle against the disease.
Things you need to know
- Breast cancer is common. In the developed world, about 10 per cent of women will develop breast cancer.
- Breast cancer kills. It is the leading cause of cancer death for women aged 35 to 55 in the US.
- Every woman is at risk. A woman's risk of developing breast cancer increases if she enters menopause after age 50 or does not bear children.
- Early detection is the best way to beat breast cancer.
When breast cancer is found and treated in the early stages, the five-year survival rate is around 95 per cent.
- Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly may reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.
- Avoiding alcohol and tobacco can reduce your chances of developing the disease.
Many studies have found a link between breast cancer and these two habits.
Things you need to do According to the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organisations early detection is key in fighting the disease.
The Alliance recommends:
- A clinical breast exam by an experienced breast-care professional every year for women 20 and older.
- Monthly breast self-exams (BSE) for women 20 and older. A large number of breast cancers are detected by women themselves.
- Annual mammograms for women 50 and older. A mammogram can reveal the presence of a lump that is far too small to be found by touch.
- Women with a family history of the disease should consult with their doctor about possible additional screenings starting at a younger age.
Women need to pay attention to the awareness campaigns and be proactive in tackling this silent killer.
