Organised by the Emirates Culinary Guild (the UAE's association of professional chefs), the Emirates International Salon Culinaire is one of the highlights of Gulfood 2008.

This four-day culinary extravaganza will take place from February 24 to 27 and will entertain and inspire visitors with seminars, cookery demonstrations, live cooking competitions, ice carving demonstrations, buffet and banquet showpieces, pastry and sugar set pieces and bakery and confectionery innovations.

The event is dedicated to the culinary arts and celebrates food by bringing together more than 1,000 culinary experts from around the world to compete for the top honours. The competitions give all aspiring chefs a chance to experience some of the most cutting-edge techniques, while giving them the opportunity to win awards that can help launch their careers.

Since the Emirates Culinary Guild is a member of the World Association of Cooks Societies (WACS — the governing body of the 52-nation alliance of chef's associations worldwide), all 25 international judges at the salon culinaire will be WACS approved and will include renowned chefs from within the industrty such as Akan Palmer from Switzerland, Axell Ruhmann from Germany, Gissur Gudmundsonn from Iceland and Huber Oberhollenzer from Italy.

"Since its inception more than two decades ago, Emirates International Salon Culinaire has been a key component of the Gulfood exhibition. The Salon Culinaire 2008 is set to be our best and biggest ever, with Emirates Culinary Guild members playing an increasingly active role," said Allen Thong, Co-ordinator, The Emirates Culinary Guild and World Association of Cooks Societies Assistant Director, Africa and Middle East.

For most chefs, the Salon Culinaire is a great motivational tool. It is a good place to network with people from the industry. Awards like Chef of the Year Award, Hygiene Award, Best Participating Hotel Award, the Junior Chef of the Year Award and the Arabic Chef of the Year Award motivate aspiring chefs and recognise the quality of ones who are already estabished in the trade. The event also gives chefs a chance to step out of their kitchens and do something exciting in front of food lovers. Considering that Dubai is an important tourist destination, the event brings together people from the hospitality industry to share the latest trends and showcases different products that belong to edible and non-edible categories. On the day of the show, industry professionals will be able to buy either a one-day pass for Dh40 or a four-day pass for Dh100.
