Dubai: Organisers are expecting several records to be re-written when the 19th GCC Swimming Championship gets under way in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
Speaking to Gulf News, Maria Moussievska, the assistant executive director of the UAE Swimming Association explained why.
"Some of the top medal contenders are coming to Abu Dhabi after participating at the Beijing Olympics. They are in prime shape and we should be expecting at few records to tumble," she remarked.
The UAE swimming team, including Obaid Al Jasmi, who participated in the Beijing Games, trained for close to two months under the supervision of national coach Jay Benner. Nearly 250 swimmers from Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and hosts UAE will be in competition at the Al Jazira Club swimming pool from August 21-27.
The 10-year-old and men's competitions will be held from August 21-23, while the events in the junior categories will be held from August 24-27.
