Dubai: As roaring engines and 6-feet high water sprays off the 20 registered entrants in the Mina Seyahi Watersports Challenge of the Dubai Wooden Powerboat race at Mina Seyahi here, there is certain to be a lot of excitement, anxiety and trepidation as to who will emerge winners.

The course, which totals 30.30 NM, stretches from Mina Seyahi Dubai to Sheraton Jumeirah. The race is scheduled to take off at 11am Speculation is rife as there is going to be stiff competition between the Atlas teams and Abu Dhabi Racing Team 2.

The Mina Seyahi Watersports Challenge commenced on April 18 and will last a month, ending with the Jet Ski Marathon.

Competitive spirit

The course, similar to the Class 3, 6ltr races, adds excitement and a competitive spirit to the race with each lap covering 4.40NM.

As soon as the green flag is raised, all the boats power up and step on the gas so to say. A spectacular view of boats, raised at the bow, always makes for a lot of action and excitement as spectators line the beaches from Royal Mirage to Sheraton Jumeirah to witness the action.

Each boat vies for the first place and wants to outsmart the other by using all the tactics and skills they possess.

From a distance, the wooden boats appear like dolphins, bobbing their head up and down on the waters. The speed with which they manoeuvre their boats is beyond compare.

Culmination

Later in the afternoon, more than 50 colourful jet skis will take to the waters in the Mina Seyahi lagoon to mark the culmination of the Mina Seyahi Watersports Challenge in the Jet Ski Marathon category.

The Marathon endurance will be held in three classes - Junior Class (30 minutes); Ski Class (1 hour) and the Runabout Class (2 hours).

Organised by Mina Seyahi Dubai - Dubai International Marine Club, under the aegis of UAE Marine Sports Federation, the jet ski races in Dubai have seen tremendous support and interest, from not only the UAE residents, but also from GCC nations. Interest and enthusiasm in the sport has seen the number of categories increase from four to eight.
