Sharjah: Sharjah Cricket Council and Ajman Cricket Council have joined hands to organise a Twenty20 Super League this season.
It is the first time in the history of UAE cricket that two councils have jointly staged a league.
Speaking to Gulf News, Mazhar Khan, the secretary of Sharjah Council said: "The teams will benefit a lot by such a league as they can plan their players' availability much in advance and play in both Ajman and Sharjah without a break."
Named as the Super League Twenty20 tournament, the matches will be held in Sharjah, Al Dhaid cricket village and Al Jurf grounds of the Ajman Council. Sixteen teams have been picked to play in this league.
Coordinated
According to the format of the league, both councils will organise two tournaments individually under the names the Ajman Council Super League and the Sharjah Invitation League.
"The two tournaments will be coordinated by the two councils with all 16 teams playing on alternate weeks in Al Dhaid Village, Sharjah and Ajman. The schedules of the matches will be released in advance until the final is played. As such, this will be the first time the teams on the domestic circuit will receive an organised schedule of their cricket calendar," said Khan.
The selected 16 teams are: Emirates Islamic Bank, Eurocon Alubond, Lanka Lions, Universal Steel, Pak Emirates, ECB Blues, Al Hamad Contracting, Khatri CC, Yogi Group, CSS Group, Nucaf Tellicherry, Ibsons CC, Rufi Real Estate, Eslam Group, Transgulf and ETA Ascon.
Sharjah Council will start their league on October 17 and Ajman Council matches will commence from October 24.
