Bangalore The sight of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly striding out to the middle could strike dread into even the best bowling attacks.

But after the four-Test series against Australia, which starts tomorrow, it seems the pair will never bat together again for India after Ganguly announced his retirement.

Tendulkar said: "I am surprised by his decision.

"Whether it is a correct decision or a wrong one is something that we should not discuss. I can only tell you that this is his personal decision and we have to respect it.

"Why is it a surprise? Because Sourav met me in the hotel in Bangalore yesterday morning but we never discussed this issue."

But Tendulkar praised the former India captain for telling his teammates first.

He said: "First of all, he informed us in the dressing room and then he went to the media. This means that he has a lot of respect for his team-mates even before announcing his brave decision, strong decision and tough decision.

"We shared some wonderful years. I was there in the middle when he made his debut in 1996.

"And he did not make any mistake in that particular Test innings when he scored 131.

"He never looked like a newcomer and that is the hallmark of a classy player.

"To me he is a special player. He scored runs against all opposition in home and away games."

Family kidnap threat

Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has received a kidnap threat against his daughter.

Ganguly disclosed the threat during a news conference announcing he would retire from test cricket after the four-match series against Australia.

Ganguly said about the threat to his six-year-old daughter, Sana: "Yes it's true, but it would be better if we don't discuss it here."

Ganguly did not provide details about the threat. However, Kolkata police officials said security around Ganguly's residence had been increased.
