Sharjah: The Asian Cricket Council honoured Abdulrahman Bukhatir, the President of the Emirates Cricket Board, who brought international cricket to the Middle East region, with a lifetime achievement award during its silver jubilee function in Karachi.
Mohammad Redha Abbas, the Executive Member of the Emirates Cricket Board, received the award on behalf of Bukhatir, who could not attend the function due to other commitments.
Abbas, who arrived in UAE with the award, said: "It is indeed a great honour for the service Bukhatir has rendered to promote the game in the region. He had honoured top cricketers around the world through beneficiary awards. It is because of his vision that this region got to watch international cricket and he rightly deserves such an award."
The trophy was presented to Abbas by Dr Nasim Ashraf, the new president of the Asian Cricket Council. Top officials and cricketers attended the function, which was held at the Mohatta Palace, the house of Fatima Jinnah.
Other awards
Bukhatir had held the post of the President of ACC from 1991 to 1993. The Asian Cricket Council office was also located at Sharjah Cricket Stadium during this period
The other officials who were honoured with lifetime achievement awards were IS Bindra of India, Syed Ashraful Haq of Bangladesh, Nur Khan of Pakistan and Gamini Dissanayake of Sri Lanka.
The Asian Council also honoured cricketers with the Silver Jubilee legend awards. India's Sunil Gavaskar, Sri Lanka's Arjuna Ranatunga, Pakistan's Imran Khan and Akram Khan of Bangladesh won this award.
