New York: Former Olympic sprinter Marion Jones was sentenced to six months in prison on Friday for lying to federal prosecutors about her steroid use and cheque-fraud.

US District Court Judge Kenneth Karas imposed the sentence after Jones pleaded guilty to two charges last October, part of a stunning demise of the five-time medallist from the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Jones cried on her husband's shoulder after she was sentenced and pleaded that she should not be separated from her two young children "even for a short period of time."

She said, "I ask you to be as merciful as a human being can be."
