Gaza city: Escalating Israel-Hamas fighting loomed after a bloody day in which 10 Palestinians, including a baby, were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, and a rocket fired from Gaza killed an Israeli in a battered town.
Palestinian health officials said a 6-month-old baby was killed and about 30 residents of nearby buildings were hurt in the Israeli attack. A few minutes later, Israeli aircraft hit two metal workshops.
Hamas claimed responsibility for the deadly rocket blast Wednesday afternoon at Sapir College in the town of Sderot, killing a student in a parking lot. He was identified by Israeli media as a 47-year-old father of four.
Hitting back late Wednesday, Israeli planes blasted the office of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and the Interior Ministry, which were empty.

The Israeli military said the targets were command posts at the government buildings and sites where weapons are made and stored. The military blamed Hamas for setting up in populated areas, saying injuries to Palestinian civilians were unintentional.
The student was the first Israeli killed by a rocket since May, when two died in separate attacks. Students at the college tried in vain to revive the stricken man, who had a gaping, bloody hole in the left side of his chest.
