Gaza: An adviser to Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad was freed on Friday after being held by Hamas for more than a month, officials said.

Omar Al Ghoul was the most senior official in the Palestinian Authority to be arrested since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June.

The well-known columnist and Hamas critic was taken from his home in Gaza in December, Fatah officials said.

Hamas said it released Ghoul after lengthy mediation with Palestinian factions.
