Occupied Jerusalem: Palestinian fighters shot several rockets and mortar shells toward southern Israel on Wednesday, hitting a house in the town of Sderot and open areas, the Israeli army said. Israeli forces had earlier in the day struck Palestinian fighters firing projectiles from three points in the Gaza Strip, killing one Hamas-affiliated militant and injuring six others, Palestinian medics and militants said.
On Wednesday, Sderot resident Danny Dahan's house was hit and he was treated at a hospital for shock, medics said.
The firing took place as US President George W. Bush heads to Israel at the start of a tour aimed at forging Middle East peace and winning the support of Arab allies amid escalating tensions with archfoe Iran.
Bush is flying on Air Force One for his first visit to Israel and the West Bank, seeking a foreign-policy triumph in his last year in office, and to rally support of Arab allies in the face of what he calls the Iranian "threat."
Israeli and Palestinian authorities have set up a massive security operation amid threats of violence, including a call by US member of Al Qaida who urged followers to greet Bush with "bombs not flowers."
