Sana'a: Arab nationalists will discuss the challenges facing the Arab Ummah in the 19th Arab National Congress in Sana'a from Saturday till May 13.

The participants, from almost all Arab countries, will discuss over the next three days five main topics, political, security, cultural, diplomatic and the Palestinian issues after 60 years of Israeli occupation, said Khalid Al Sufyani, Secretary General of the congress, on Friday.

Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh will open the congress, said Al Sufyani.

The first round of the congress was held in 1990 in Tunisia.

The annual congress, which has about 700 members from all Arab countries, has been held in Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, Bahrain, Yemen, Sudan, Qatar and Syria.

The congress is being held in Yemen for the second time since 2003. "The congress is a framework for consultations among Arab nationalists over the Arab civilised project which has six elements: Arab unity, democracy, independence, development, social justice, and civilisational renewal," Al Sufyani told Gulf News.

Dr Raghid Al Sulh will present to the congress a comprehensive assessment for the Arab joint work, mechanisms and obstacles.

The Arab security and joint defence treaty, reality, horizons and obstacles, will be presented by Brigadier Talat Musalam.

The mechanism of the Arab economic unity between reality and ambition will be presented by Dr Zaid Al Hafez.

Issues

The Arab organisation for culture, science and education, and the Arab cultural strategy, reality and obstacles will be presented by Dr Ali Bin Mohammad.

The Arab joint diplomacy, limits of cooperation and reasons of stagnancy, will be presented by Dr Ebrahim Yusri.

The idea of a united Arab parliament will be discussed by Dr Adnan Amran.

The Arab joint people work (non-official), reality, obstacles and horizons will be presented by Abdul Azeem Al Maghrabi.

Dr Mohammad Al Saeed Adris and Shafeek A. Houth will speak on the Palestine issue.
