Dubai: Ten people were killed and more than 180 others were injured in accidents involving minibuses in the first half of this year, a senior police official said.
According to statistics from the traffic department, minibuses were involved in 77 road accidents in the first six months of this year. The accidents killed 10 people and injured 180 others. Meanwhile, big transport buses were involved in 55 accidents, which killed eight people and injured 113 others.
Leniency
There are 22,526 registered minibuses in Dubai until the beginning of July this year.
Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said 147 people were killed in road accidents since the beginning of this year until the end of June. He said the campaign on minibuses launched by the department last week is continuing and traffic control teams will not be lenient with any offending minibus drivers and will confiscate the vehicle for one month.
Meanwhile, Brigadier Al Zafein said there were 9,099 offences related to not wearing seatbelts in the first six months of this year.
He said the department is working on legislation to make seatbelts in the backseats obligatory, as it endangers the lives of passengers in cases of collisions.
