Dubai: More than 100 jaywalkers were fined for crossing from undesignated areas in just two days, a senior police official said.
Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said traffic control teams caught 107 jaywalkers and prevented them from crossing from undesignated areas last week in Deira.
He said the jaywalkers were fined and referred to police stations on charges of endangering the lives of others by crossing from undesignated areas.
The fine for crossing from undesignated areas is Dh200 and the pedestrian has to give an undertaking at the police station not to repeat the offence.
Brigadier Al Zafein said 40 per cent of deaths in road accidents are pedestrians. He said many of those pedestrians caught trying to cross from undesignated areas lack traffic culture and knowledge of rules.
Safety
Brigadier Al Zafein said the traffic department is keen on intensifying efforts to deter pedestrians from crossing from undesignated areas to ensure the safety of all road users and to reduce accidents.
"Reducing run over accidents is among the priorities of the traffic department, as many accidents take place because pedestrians do not abide by the rules to cross roads at designated points and do not use available pedestrian crossings," he said.
According to statistics from the traffic department, 27 pedestrians were killed in the first three months of this year compared to 23 during the same period of last year.
