Dubai: A cook is facing trial for getting drunk and stabbing his compatriot to death following a scuffle on the rooftop of a villa that was reportedly run as a brothel.

The 40-year-old Indian cook has been charged with premeditated murder and running the villa as a brothel with his 45-year-old compatriot housemaid.

Records said the housemaid, K.K., rented the villa in her name and ran it as a brothel after she brought in a number of sex workers.

A 30-year-old Indian witness said the murder suspect and the victim, P.D., were drinking liquor on the rooftop before he heard them quarrelling.

Scream

Shortly afterwards he heard a scream and when he rushed to check what happened he saw the defendant carrying a blood-soaked knife, while the victim was crying with pain and fell down to the ground.

The housemaid denied guilt. "I am innocent. I did not run a brothel, nor did I hire any girls to work as prostitutes," she testified before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.

The Public Prosecution charged the cook and the housemaid with jointly running the brothel.

A 35-year-old jobless Indian, O.K., and his 28-year-old compatriot visitor, B.R., were charged with aiding and abetting the housemaid by doing her bookkeeping.

The alleged bookkeepers denied their charges and pleaded not guilty before the court.

Detention

The cook, identified as B.M., was not brought from his detention and did not testify.

The Indian witness testified: "B.M., the deceased, O.K. and B.R. came to my room on the rooftop. The last two remained in the room while B.M. and the deceased went out. After a while we heard them scuffling before we intervened and stopped them. Five minutes later they went out and started fighting again. When I went out I saw B.M. holding the knife and the victim fell down, bleeding from his back."

The residents of the villa were unable to find a taxi to take the defendant to hospital.

B.M. had earlier confessed to his interrogators that he consumed liquor and stabbed the victim.
