Dubai: Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief, has said he would like to enter the Federal National Council (FNC) as a speaker.
"The new FNC term will be different. It needs a new foundation and new blood," said Lieutenant General Dahi.
He said there will be a new chapter in the history of the FNC if he is elected speaker .
Half of the 40 members of the FNC will be elected, while the rest will be named by the Rulers of the various emirates, based on a quota. Voting, which is expected to take place in December, will be done by secret ballot over a three-day period.
Every emirate will have an executive committee with five members representing the municipality, the police and the Ruler's Court.
Lieutenant General Dahi said if elected to the FNC he would give up his police job. "It will be very hard for me to leave the police. But serving the community as a member of the FNC is very important."
According to the law, he said, a government official cannot hold more than one job.
"While some officials may want to break the law and work in a government department and be a member of the FNC, I cannot.
"This is a chance for UAE nationals to practice democracy and to elect members who will represent them in the FNC.
"I am not looking to be just a member of the FNC … My ambition is to be the speaker of the FNC. I am planning to establish a new system in the FNC. I am convinced that the FNC at the moment is in need of people who have a new way of thinking. I believe I am the only suitable person who can bring changes and development to the FNC.
"We need new blood to change old ways."
He said the FNC needs an experienced man who has spent his life serving his community.
"There is a need for a person who can understand public needs.
"I will be the best person for the [post of] FNC speaker, because I have spent my life serving the people and I have done a lot for Dubai.
"My experiences help me to know how people think, what is on their minds, what their abilities are, their wishes and needs," he said.
He said FNC members should only work to serve the public and the community. They must not use the FNC for their own benefit.
"I can assure that I will not take advantage of the FNC or benefits from it."
