Dubai: Municipality is to launch a massive clean-up campaign in one of the most congested areas of Dubai on Wednesday.
The ‘Say Yes to Clean Naif’ drive will continue for a month.
Residents and shopkeepers in Naif, which still retains the old Dubai charm, will be given lessons on the importance of keeping surroundings clean.
The campaign will focus on keeping the Naif area clean by stopping littering, spitting (especially after eating paan, a South and South East Asian tradition that consists of chewing Betel leaf (Piper betle) combined with areca nut) in the streets and building, and drying clothes on balconies.
According to Local Order No 11 of 2003, the import, sale and use of paan is banned because of its health risks and the fact that users frequently spit residue. Trading in paan is an offence and can result in a Dh5,000 fine.
The chewing and spitting of paan, especially in public places, was prohibited in Dubai following Local Order No. 28 of 1985.
Paan trade still flourishes illegally in many parts of Bur Dubai and Deira, despite a clamp down by the municipality.
Similarly, a campaign was also initiated by the municipality in 2006 against hanging of clothes in the balcony and littering.
