Dubai:  A young man who lost his hand and four fingers has been given a boost by a Dubai-based Indian organisation to fight his disability.

Mohammad N.C., 21, is the eldest of four siblings. An accident while crossing the rail tracks in his hometown located in the South Indian state of Kerala cost him his right hand and four fingers on his left hand.

"I was 14 when the accident occurred. I was coming back from school on foot. The route that brought me to my house ran alongside a railway track," said Mohammad who is currently in the UAE on a visit visa and hoping to get some sort of job.

It was only his sheer grit and determination that got him through his last few years at school and he sat for his final year examination for a Bachelor of Economics degree before coming to the UAE.

"I got myself a writer to write my examination papers in school but after that I decided to get through every examination on my own. I can hold a pen with my thumb and palm. There are plans to get myself into computer-related courses," said Mohammad who has been making inquiries about getting himself fitted with a prosthetic hand.

"A poor man like me would never be able to get that done. For me it's wishful thinking. But I am ready to beat all odds and achieve some earning capability in the coming years so that I do not come across as a burden for my family," he added.

It is often said that fortune favours the brave and that is what happened with Mohammad whose search for an earning opportunity in UAE put him in touch with volunteers at the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) in Dubai. Moved as well as impressed by his never-say-die attitude the KMCC volunteers are now doing all they can to gather enough help in kind and cash to help him put his life together.

Ebrahim Murchandi, general secretary of the KMCC said: "By word of mouth in the community we are trying to raise some funds so that Mohammad will be able to get himself a prosthetic hand which costs about 700,000 Indian rupees (about Dh60,000).

"He has come so far on his own, a little helping hand will help him go a long way in life."
