Dubai: The open beach to the right of the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club (DOSC) has been closed due to higher levels of E.coli than normal found there, said Mohammad Abdul Rahman Hassan, Head of Marine Environment Protection Section, Dubai Municipality, on Sunday.
Tests have been carried out by Dubai Municipality and higher than normal levels of E.coli was found on the beach caused by raw sewage discharged around the area.
According to the World Health Organisation, E.Coli symptoms include abdominal cramps and diarrhoea that may in some cases progress to bloody diarrhoea (haemorrhagic colitis). Fever and vomiting may also occur.
Most patients recover within 10 days, but in a small proportion of patients, particularly young children and the elderly, the infection may lead to a life-threatening disease, such as haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS).
Sewage has been repeatedly pumped into the ocean around the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club after being illegally dumped in storm drains across the city instead of being dropped at Al Aweer Sewage Treatment plant.
