Dubai is gearing up to support the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour on Saturday.
Thousands of residents will join organizations across the emirate in switching off all non-essential lights for one hour at 8pm.

I switch off the lights everyday by aroudn 8.30pm. The only thing running on electricity is my TV, which is switched on for one hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. So this Earth Hour campaign doesn't seem unusual to me.

It's a small step in the right direction and I am taking this step by putting off all the lights and using a candle light for the one hour in remembrance of our past generations who lived and managed life with less energy than we have now.

I will definitely do my part, but this is "a drop in the ocean" and the real need is to organize big moves to conserve more energy.

It is a great idea that could be implemented at least twice a year. As we know Dubai is a city of lights. There is a lot of consumption of electricity here. This will really help us in saving energy across the world.

When on a global level nations can do far more than this trivial effort, where is the point in advocating Earth Hour? I am for Earth eternal not Earth Hour.

General awareness must be brought to people around the world, not only for conserving energy, but also for the sake of the future generation who will suffer due to the effects of pollution caused by current generation.

I think this is all show and nothing else. In the mall that I work, there are display lights turned on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sunshine in this part of the world is bright enough; we should take advantage of it.

I understand that the Earth Hour campaign is against global warming. Then how will the lantern parade help? Any form of heat energy will add to global warming.

I think it is an excellent initiative. Not because this small gesture will drastically change the environment but because it will hopefully make more people aware of what we are all waisting!

Neither I nor my friends will be part of this. Either take serious steps to conserve energy and protect the environment or refrain from being part of this move. I wonder who would have gotten involved had this event taken place in August?
