Dubai: Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, on Saturday met representatives of Unicef and a delegation from Djibouti, where Dubai Cares is starting its first primary education project.
The meeting focused on initiating follow-up action on the memorandum of understanding signed between Dubai Cares and Unicef for implementing primary education projects in developing regions, with Djibouti as its first initiative.
The Djibouti officials, led by Minister of Education Abdi Ebrahim Absieh, expressed their appreciation to efforts made by the Dubai government in helping educate one million children through the Dubai Cares charity campaign.
Omar Shehadeh, Advisor-External Affairs, Dubai Cares, said the campaign was breaking ground in developing countries "in just a few months" since it started.
He added: "The Djibouti-Unicef delegation's meeting with Shaikh Maktoum demonstrates the partnership is beginning to take shape for helping children and their communities in developing nations from the debilitating effects of poverty."
Dubai Cares was launched on September 19, 2007 by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
During the campaign, Shaikh Mohammad's sons and daughters toured a number of developing countries to personally understand the children's struggle in obtaining basic education.
