From Hebron to Jordan: 150km in 9 hours 8:30am - Left the Halahla house in the village of Kharas Al Khalil, en route to Allenby Bridge, connecting Israel to Jordan, by taxi. 8:35am - Come to first Israeli military checkpoint, where it is suggested that the family take an alternative route, as the soldiers are not letting anyone pass. 9:00am - After a circuitous route, they end up at the "Container" checkpoint, near Bethlehem. They are made to wait an hour. 10:00am - Arriving on the outskirts of Jerusalem in Abu Dis, there is another checkpoint that keeps the family waiting. 10:30am - Driving through the streets of Jericho for the first time in their lives. "I felt so bad that I had never been able to see these areas, or show my children their country," says Kareema Halahla, Yousuf's mother.
10:45am - Reach the Palestinian border terminal. In a convoy of buses, they slowly progress through the several Israeli checkpoints. The travellers are told that they will have to wait in the buses because the soldiers were trying to find "something".
