Washington: John McCain may have an insurmountable lead in the Republican presidential race, but Mike Huckabee, his strongest remaining challenger, has not given up hope of a miracle.
The former Arkansas governor and one-time Baptist preacher has vowed to remain in the contest until it is mathematically impossible for him to win, dispelling McCain's hopes of a speedy coronation.
His decision to launch a legal challenge against the outcome in Washington state - where McCain was declared the winner with only 87 per cent of the votes counted - underlined his determination to keep fighting.
"That is not what we do in American elections," Huckabee said on CNN, referring to the Washington vote. "Maybe that's how they used to conduct it in the old Soviet Union, but you don't just throw people's votes out and say, 'well, we're not going to bother counting them because we kind of think we know where this was going'."
