Dubai: The spirit of giving in Ramadan was evident at a labour accommodation in Jebel Ali where workers enjoyed a lavish iftar yesterday.

About 2,600 Al Ghandi and Consolidated Contractors Company workers sat along side officials and volunteers from Watani which organised the event.

Watani, a national identity programme launched last December will be organising similar iftars every week in various emirates.

"Ramadan is the month of sharing and the iftars organised by us invite everyone," said Ahmad Obaid Al Mansouri, coordinator general of Watani who spoke with the workers in Hindi and English at the Al Ghandi accommodation.

"Hospitality is part of our national identity. This is what Watani is all about. We want to mingle with these workers and convey the message that they are part of our society."

R.K., a worker carrying a bowl of soup in one hand and a plate of fruit in the other was all smiles. He said: "It is such a festive atmosphere inside the canteen during iftar time. It is nice to see that even those who are not fasting are joining us. I will take home happy memories of this Rama-dan when I go back home next year."

B.S., another worker, said: "I was sharing information with one of the Watani officials on how Ramadan is observed in India. Over there we get invited for iftar by people in our districts.
