Bani-Sadr takes office amid doubt over his powers
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini officially launched Abolhassan Bani-Sadr on his mission as Iran's first-ever president, but left in doubt just how much the 46-year-old economist would be able to use his new position in the coming weeks.
Bani-Sadr launched his four-year term with a vow to "fill the world with revolutions." The ceremony appointing the new President took place in a simple room in a Tehran hospital, where Khomeini is recuperating from a heart ailment.
Delma island to be giant oil terminal
President His Highness Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan ordered the development of Delma island as a new oil terminal cum harbour complex. Shaikh Zayed declared that work on this 750 million dollar project would start immediately. It will be carried out by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in collaboration with the Japanese Oil Company. The multi-purpose Delma complex will have facilities for landing containers and oil tanks. It will serve three oil fields of Al Satteh, Jurnin and Delma.
Libya 'ignores help plea' as mobs raid embassies
A Libyan mob screaming slogans against French involvement in Africa stormed and burned the French Embassy in Tripoli and then attacked the Tunisian mission, French and Tunisian authorities charged. All personnel at the two Embassies were able to escape unharmed although Libyan authorities ignored pleas for help from Freneh Ambassador Charles Malo, officials said.
National Guard recaptures jail, frees hostages
National Guardsmen and a police team recaptured the New Mexico State Prison to free all those held by rioting prisoners who made the penitentiary a bloodbath at least 14 inmates dead and 50 persons hospitalised. State Governor Bruce King, who said he agreed with the plan to send in the troops despite threats that the hostages would be killed, told reporters the number of dead inmates had reached 14.
