Militant students occupying the US Embassy, fearing a political compromise with Washington to secure the release of their American hostages, called for mass demonstrations of solidarity.
In a broadcast statement they called on people of every locality of Tehran to march on the occupied compound. Meanwhile, West Germany's UN Ambassador Rudiger Von Wechmar predicted in a broadcast interview in New York that the hostages would be freed in four to eight weeks under Waldheim's plan.
Turkey readies for' all-out war'
Turkey ordered military instruction for all children from the age of seven "to meet the requirements of an all-out war." Announcing the unprecedented move, it was aimed at "protecting the Turkish Republic against all kinds of assault, to reinforce the innate consciousness of national defence among our youth to meet the requirements of an all-out war.
The announcement was the strongest hint of military influence in Turkey since the armed forces chiefs last month issued an ultimatum to the politicians to stop bickering in the face of political and economic crises.
Russia denies oil designs
The Soviet Union said it has no intention of starting a war by making a move toward the Arabian Gulf oil fields, and suggested U.S. warnings of a Russian thrust toward the Gulf were intended to cover up an American campaign of domination.
"The Soviet Union has never had and does not have now any intention to push its way to the warm seas," the Communist Party newspaper Pravda declared.
