Brezhnev hints at retaliation

Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev has attacked China's recent invasion of Vietnam and said further military action could meet with a firm Soviet response.

Brezhnev said “a big power has resorted to arms and made an incursion into a neighbouring country while affirming cynically that it wanted to give that country a lesson."

Kuwaiti Prime Minister warns

Kuwait's Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Shaikh Saad Al Abdullah Al Sabah, warned of "superpower schemes for creating dissension" in the oil-rich area of the Gulf. Shaikh Saad said their objective was "to promote their interests in this area that is vital to the world economy in view of its huge' oil resources and strategic position. The only safeguard against the dangers created by superpower rivalry is genuine co-ordination among the Gulf states."

The vote race and race vote

Politicians and police have condemned the violence in suburban Southhall, where one man was killed, 40 others were injured and 300 were arrested. The incident hospitalised 40 men, of whom 21 were police. They had battled with left wing anti-racist demonstrators trying to end a meeting by the ultra-right wing National Front party. The dead man was schoolteacher Blair Peach, a New Zealander protesting against the National Front.

Legendary Weismuller now mentally sick

Johnny Weismuller, winner of five Olympic gold medals and holder one time of 67 world records and 52 national swimming records in the US is now mentally ill. Like Jessie Syndrome his name is known in all corners of the world owing to the cartoon strips Tarzan and his role in the film as Tarzan.
