Move to cut food prices

Dh50 million food subsidy program for the UAE was discussed at an ad hoc committee meeting of directors of municipalities held in Abu Dhabi. This meeting follows the decision of His Highness President Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan to allocate Dh50 million this year for food subsidies to ensure that essential foods are available to the UAE nationals and the rest of the population at lower prices.

Dubai Fair ended

Over one hundred thousand people visited the eleven-day Dubai Spring Fairw. This high turnout not only made the Spring Fair first to be held in Dubai a tremendous success, it gave a big boost to UAE trade and industry, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry sources said.

Saudis break off with Egypt

Saudi Arabia broke off diplomatic and political relations with Egypt for signing a peace treaty with Israel. The Saudi Information Minister, Mohammed Abdo Yamani announced the Egyptian decision of the cabinet meeting chaired by Prince Abdullah. The punitive measure, announced after a cabinet meeting, did not cover economic ties with Egypt, a major beneficiary of Saudi economic aid. Kuwait also cut off political and economic links.

Mutiny in Kabul

An Afghan regiment has mutinied in Jalalabad, killing officers who supported the pro-Communist Government, according to reports emerging from Afghanistan. The reports, which could not be immediately confirmed, said the mutiners were immediately surrounded by troops loyal to President Noor Mohammed Tarakki.
