High Court of Appeal in Dubai
His Highness Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai has issued a decree signalling the formation of the High Court of Appeal in Dubai and the appointment of its members. The Decree was issued in accordance with the law pertaining to the High Court of Appeal, Number 3 for 1979. In accordance with Article 4 of this Law, appointed the following learned Justices: Mohammadd Ahmad Al Hinawi as Chairman, Hassan Ismail Qasim as Deputy Chairman. The High Court of Appeal is empowered to examine various appeals submitted by Lower Courts as well as other cases related to the Civil and Criminal Codes.
Egypt sought to defuse a mounting controversy over the future of the Israeli occupied Golan Heights by saying a remark on the subject by Prime Minister Mustapha Khalil had been widely misinterpreted. Some press reports quoted Dr Khalil as having told a closed Parliamentary Committee meeting last weekend that any move by Syria to recover the Golan Heights would be an act of defence and that Egypt would stand by it.
Decisive battle for Kampala
Ugandan President Idi Amin's best reserve troops clung to a defence line in the banana groves and coffee plantations just south of Kampala after rallying against invading Tanzanian forces and anti-Amin rebels. Ugandan exiles said that Field Marshal Amin had thrown crack units of the Ugandan army into the battle on the shores of Lake Victoria.
Olivier, Wayne get standing ovations
Two films on the Vietnam war, a conflict that divided the United States and which Hollywood once ignored scooped up the "Oscar". Jane Fonda and Jon Voight were chosen as 'Best Actress' and 'Best Actor for 'Coming Home' and 'The Deer Hunter' won the Best Film award. But the biggest ovation was kept for two 71-year-old stars, Laurence Olivier, who won a special 'Oscar' for his lifetime contribution to films and John Wayne, who looked thinner but was still upright after having his stomach removed because of cancer. They got standing ovations.
