Iran's Qasr jail conforms to UN standards

An International Group of Lawyers just back from Iran said conditions in Tehran's Qasr prison conformed with UN standards of detention.

The group, which included lawyers from France, Morocco and Benin visited Tehran at the invitation of the Iranian Human Rights Movement and the new Islamic Revolutionary Government. They said there was no overcrowding in Qasr prison, food was adequate and prisoners were allowed regular exercise and family visits.

UAE among the wealthiest

Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE are the wealthiest nations of the world in terms of individual income, according to the World Bank report. The report quoting the 1976 figures says that the average individual income in the three Gulf countries exceeds 10,000 dollars a year.

Clean sweep for Liberals

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) completed a clean sweep in elections for governors in 15 of the country's 47 prefectures, increasing the likelihood of early general elections being called this year. The LPD led by Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira, recaptured the governorships of Japan's two major prefectures, Tokyo and Osaka, from Communist-backed incumbents for the first time in 12 and eight years respectively.

Reactor leak due to human faults

US Energy Secretary James Schlesinger said he believes the blame for the nuclear reactor accident at Pennsylvania will fall on people and management rather than on nuclear policy. The accident he said was the most serious in nuclear history. Schlesinger said he believes the nuclear accident at the Three Mile Island power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, came about because of deficiencies in procedures, and the training of persons who manage of the plant.
