Disaster averted at nuclear plant

Scientists believe they have tamed a runaway atomic reactor and headed off potentially the most devastating accident since the advent of nuclear power. Officials said the situation at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, seemed to have improved sufficiently to avert the need to evacuate thousands of people faced with the threat of radiation contamination. The cause of the trouble, a bubble of hydrogen and other gases in the core of the plant's reactor, is now gone.

Begin's appeal to the Arab world

Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin appealed to the Arab World from Cairo to join Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Mideast peace-making efforts. Begin said, “we hope and wish that our peace treaty be the first step towards a comprehensive settlement of all the conflicts in our region in which we are all destined, all of us, to live together for ever."

State secrets recovered from Bhutto's homes

Pakistan Government said it had seized state secrets in raids on three homes owned by condemned former Premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The dramatic announcement was made after Bhutto's wife and daughter Benazir spent two and a half hours in his death cell at Rawaipindi district prison. "Secret documents of an extremely sensitive nature pertaining to state security, including defence and foreign affairs were recovered," the note said.

Taiwan to stay in IAAF

The expulsion of Taiwan from the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) in last October was ruled invalid by a British high court judge. "Both Chinas can be and are members of the lAAF simultaneously," Justice Forbes said.
