An amendment to the labour law to enforce a two-day weekend in the private sector is under consideration. Prior to submission to the Cabinet for approval, subcommittees will discuss the issue. All being well the new article will be implemented by early next year. Certainly it is yet another step being taken by the ministry to bring the labour laws into line with many of the practices undertaken internationally.

Of course there are bound to be objections, not least among the smaller private sector businesses that may trade on what is now known as 24/7 all day, every day. Some businesses will complain they cannot afford the extra staff needed to comply with the law. But then, many companies already get their staff working excessively, so it is hoped if the new law is introduced, sterner measures are taken to ensure the private sector fully complies with the labour laws.
